Who was the first nominee by the Republican Party?

I must say, I was surprised to read that Abe Lincoln was the first Republican President, and also that the Republican Party was started principally to oppose the Kansas-Nebraska act (expansion of Slavery) If you were asked today, what party seems to champion the needs of minorities more. Most would say the Democrats. Agree? Don't you find int interesting how ideology changes over time? (Note* Not meant to be a slam on Reps)
