How do I eradicate blanket weed in my pond?

Hi. I have a lot of trouble with this horrid stuff in my pond. Is it due to direct sunlight? Mine is in the sun all day. I am able to put a half or full 'roof 'on it if it will help. It has already killed my sterlet (must have got caught up in some). Effective help needed. Thanks all
