My house get foreclosed and i left my dogs behind and now i'm charged with animal cruelty. Why? is this fair?

my house get foreclosed because i could not afford the mortgage payments. my financial decline started in late 2008 when my coffee shops failed. i sold my coffee shops for about 300,000. My monthly mortgage was 6000 a month as it was a huge house. By August 2010 i fell behind on mortgage, and then could not pay it anymore. Foreclosure notice came and i moved into a 1 bed room condominium which i bought after financing it through the remaining savings i had from sale of coffee shops . in the midst of all this i left my dogs on the street when moving out of house. i could not take them because it is 1 bedroom condominium and dog not also allowed there. Due to confusion, stress and chaos i left dogs near the stop sign of street and went away. I left them with pack of dog food and "adopt me" label hanging from their necks. Now i'm charged with animal cruelty of abandonment and neglect. My cirstances were very rough and harsh. What could have i done anymore?
