How do I use a filter with a 4x5 view camera?

I don't have a filter holder, but I'm using a gelatin filter with a 4x5 view camera. So, do I meter through the filter? And then....is it possible to just kinda tape the filter on and shoot? Any help would be SO appreciated! :) Thanks!
