Fresh pumpkin puree vs canned?

Is using fresh pumpkins in desserts really that much better than the canned stuff? I've made pies with canned pumpkin puree before and it was yummy but I've been hearing that using the fresh and pureeing it yourself is sooo much better. Of course, fresh vs. canned is generally always better but is there a noticeable difference for pumpkin puree?
